Day and night he danced in ecstasy,
revolving on the earth like the heavens.
His ecstatic cries reached the zenith of the skies
and were heard by all and sundry.

Dr. Ali Abadi
Topic:

Islam, Religious Pluralism and
                Interfaith Dialogue.

Dr. Aliabadi's presentation will be an overview of religious pluralism and interfaith dialogue from a Muslim perspective.
In a global village and post 9/11 world, as Hans Kung - the great Catholic Theologian reminds us:
No survival without a world ethic.  No world peace without peace between the religions.  No peace between the religions without dialogue between the religions.  In light of today's world crisis and specially the application of violence in the name of religion, more so than ever, we are in need of a broad, tolerant and pluralist view of religion.
After a brief historical overview of religious pluralism and interfaith dialogue in the West and the Islamic World, Dr. Aliabadi will discuss Abdolkarim Soroush's unique contribution to the debate on religious pluralism in Islam.  He'll continue his presentation with brief summary of the principles of interfaith dialogue in general and the Qur'anic view of other religions in particular.  Furthermore, he will point to the positive attitudes of the Qur'an towards other religions, historical peaceful coexistence of the Muslims with the People of the Book (Jews and Christians), the positive contributions of such great classical thinkers as Rumi and Ibn Arabi; and the contribution of contemporary Muslim intellectuals such as Muhammad Iqbal, Fazlur Rahman and Abdolkarim Soroush as the frame of reference in the Islamic tradition to put forward an innovative approach to religious pluralism and interfaith dialogue.

Finally, he will maintain that religious pluralism and interfaith dialogue enable us to mutually appreciate and respect each other's traditions and  eliminate misconceptions and as a result make a major contribution to the world peace and the peaceful coexistence of the world religious communities.
