Food Drive

As part of Community Service and celebration of upcoming Ramadan, Sufi Circle has teamed up with Long Island Cares to host its 4th annual Ramadan Food Drive from Sunday September 1 to September 30, 2008.
(Collection dates;  Sundays September 14 and October 12, 2008.)

"You cannot attain to righteousness unless you spend (in charity) out of what you love."

      Quran 3:92

Many thousands of children, women and men live in abject poverty on Long Island. Things that we take for granted - regular meals, housing, and education - are considered luxuries in some of the Long Island's poorest families. By working together we can help make a real difference and bring about positive change to many people's lives.

Ramadan (beginning at September 24, 2006 for one month) for Muslims is the month of charity and contributions. Charity or Zakat represents the unbreakable bond between members of the community, whom Prophet Mohammad described to be "like the organs of the body, if one suffers then all others rally in response."

Charity or Zakat in Islam means grow (in goodness) or 'increase', 'purifying' or 'making pure'. The Quran encourages the Muslims to donate their funds: 'the likeness of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah, is as the likeness of a grain that sprouts seven spikes. In every spike there are 100 grains, and Allah multiplies for whom He will' (Quaran 2:261). Giving charity is thereby is seen as a means to multiply one's fortune and income in terms of spiritual observance.
